Manila, Philippines - Six (6) promising Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) participated along with the Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Tourism (MTIT) to represent the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) during the first-ever Halal Expo Philippines, held from November 14 to 16, 2024, at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through Halal Program Director Aleem S. Guaipal, this year’s event focuses on "Shaping the Future of the Philippine Halal Industry Together."
The MSMEs participating in the expo represents the region’s rich heritage and craftsmanship. These include Aretes, Maranao Collectibles, Maguindanao Weaving Council, Binabatik, Abante Lamitan Weaver Association, and Bulda Manis Producers Cooperative.
MTIT Minister Abuamri A. Taddik personally graced the event with his presence along with Bureau of Trade and Industry (BTI) Director Hussein B. Biruar, MTIT Provincial Directors and staff from regional and provincial offices.
The Halal Expo Philippines aims to promote Halal-certified products and services across various sectors, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, and financial services. By connecting manufacturers, retailers, and consumers, the event fosters networking and potential partnerships, while a series of workshops educate attendees on Halal certification, standards, and industry trends.
The expo also showcases key sessions on the global Halal market, Halal certification, and research, along with hands-on workshops and live cooking demos by chefs Zhe Jacinto and Rommel Papa. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) highlights innovations in Halal standards for food and cosmetics. The event is supported by government agencies including DTI, NCMF, DA, and DOST.
The Halal Expo is open to the public and will continue until November 16, 2024. Visitors are invited to explore a diverse showcase of Halal products and gain insights into the evolving Halal industry. (𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙨 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣)

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi - The Product Development, Standards and Accreditation Division (PDSAD) of the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism-Bureau of Tourism in coordination with the MTIT-Tawi-Tawi conducted the Familiarization Tour on Tawi-Tawi last October 28-30, 2024.
Said activity aims to establish linkage and partnership with the private sector to enhance the tourism landscape of Tawi-Tawi Province including the inclusion of the province’s tourism sites and destinations on their respective tour packages.
An enriching experience aimed at showcasing the province’s unique cultural heritage and natural beauty for Davao Association of Tour Operators President Ms. Cynthia E. Ruano; Ma. Emerita E. Japay of RMV Travel & Tours; Ma. Hanna Alzate of RH-Destinations Travel & Tours; Benmar Muplihon Hussin of Bhenny Travel and Tours; Nelgrace T. Benaires of Right Deal Travel & Tours; Marivic Ramirez of MTR Travel & Tours; Sarah Jane H. Khu of Tourist Depot Travel & Tours and Mr. Cesar Villanueva of the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB).
The Team begun the tour by visiting tourist sites and destination in the mainland. First stop was at the Chinese Pier where local trading scene was observed; Badjao Village with actual mat weaving and hands-on experience; ocular visit to accommodation facilities; and Baloboc Cave where some historical artifacts were found reflecting the importance on the preservation of archaeological sites and treasures.
Day 2 was dedicated to an exhilarating island-hopping adventure in Panampangan Island, renowned for its longest sandbar in the Philippines; Simunul Island where Islamization first took place; Siangay Siapo which showcased the province’s natural landscape and biodiversity.
A trek to the province’s Bud Bongao, the tallest peak in Bongao Municipality at 342 meters above sea level with 1,800 steps going up unravel the beauty and rich natural resources that can be found there.
The said tour will strengthen the tourism traffic in the province, build concrete promotions and marketing strategies, develop the infrastructure and tourism capability of Tawi-Tawi, development of tourism related establishments’ (TREs) capacity to provide clients’ needs in terms of goods and services, boost the province’s potential in tourism, and the involvement and commitment of the communities and the local government units (LGUs) in tourism activities.

Focused on building long-term community resilience and promoting sustainable disaster management practices, the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism (MTIT) regional office, through its Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection (TRCP) division, organized a three-day training on Disaster Risk Reduction Management from November 4 to 6, 2024, at Almari Hotel, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
In today’s ever-changing environment, with countless disaster risks, this essential training aimed to capacitate participants with knowledge and skills necessary to identify, prepare for, respond to, and recover from potential hazards.
“Our region is among the disaster-prone regions in the Philippines with floods, landslides, and tropical storm that affect thousands of our people. Just like a month ago, we experienced heavy rainfall and landslides in some areas in Mindanao and many were forced to leave their homes due to the calamity.” expressed by MTIT Hon. Minister Abuamri A. Taddik during his opening message.
“It is our responsibility to protect ourselves and loved ones, our livelihood and our community, by being vigilant to reduce the impact of calamities in our lives. I encourage everyone to participate attentively for this rare opportunity to enlighten us and ensure our safety.” Minister Taddik added.
The training sessions, mainly facilitated by May Cadiao, Rhealuz Cabrera, and Jeralie Paris as the resource persons from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) -BARMM, covered topics including the introduction to the Philippine DRRM System, understanding hazards, organizing disaster control groups, using the Incident Command System, ensuring workplace safety, public service continuity planning, conducting evacuation drills, and DRRM application.
Additionally, the training was also graced by Sir Mohammad Khan Hamid, from the Tawi-Tawi Bureau of Fire Protection office and shared discussion on Ensuring Fire Safety in the Workplace. Representatives from the Tawi-Tawi Red Cross also attended and shared discussions and demonstrations about Basic First Aid and Ensuring Health Safety.
Participants included TRCP personnel from MTIT regional office, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao. In addition, one representative from the Bangsamoro Halal Consumer Group (BHCG) and Bangsamoro Price Coordinating Council (BPCC) representatives, including Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR), Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) and Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority (BPDA), also participated in the said activity.
During the closing message given by the MTIT-Basilan Provincial Director Argie Sarco, he expressed his gratitude on behalf of the participants to the MTIT-TRCP regional office for organizing the training and for inviting them. He also highlighted the importance of the activity not just for themselves but also for the people that surround them. Basilan - Eight tour operators and three (3) tour guides from the cities of General Santos, Kidapawan, Marawi, Pagadian, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga and DOT- Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) representative Alberto B. Gadia joined the Familiarization Tour in Basilan Province last October 22-23, 2024.
The primary aim of this activity was for the participants to have a deeper understanding on the province’s culture and tradition, have a taste of its cuisine and delicacies and experience the natural wonders of Basilan including the offerings of the tourism related establishments (TREs). This will entail interaction and partnership in support to the development of the tourism circuit that will eventually result to income generation, increase in investment opportunities and increase in tourist arrivals.
It was also aimed for the participating tour operators namely Travelscope Travel and Tours from Kidapawan City; Swift Travel and Tours from Misamis Oriental; iTravel Tourist Lane from Zamboanga del Sur; KAP-RANAW Travel and Tours from Lanao del Sur; VJC Travel and Tours from General Santos City; MTR Travel Specialist from Zamboanga del Sur; Tour Guide- Basilan’s own HAPIsabela Tourguide's Association and Zamboanga City’s Tour Guide - Asociacion de Guia Turistico del Zamboanga, Tour Zamboanga and JMS Travel and Tours to design and include in their tour packages Basilan’s tourism sites and destinations, thereby enhancing tourism flow in this part of the Bangsamoro region.
The collaborative efforts between the Product Development and Standards and Accreditation Division (PDSAD) of the MTIT-Bureau of Tourism and the MTIT-Basilan Provincial Office proved that the inclusion of the private partners are essential in the promotions of the region’s tourism products. The support of the local government unit (LGU) will draw a clear path geared towards the tourism industry enhancement.
Part of the group’s itinerary crafted to offer participants an extensive insight into the tourism opportunities available in Basilan were City Tour in Lamitan during the first day concentrated on discovering the cultural, historical, and natural sites in and around Lamitan City to include Lamitan City Public Market, Wee Siu Tuy Memorial Hall, Bulingan Falls, Lamitan Eco Park, Sitti Auna Riverland Resort and Hotel, Jezreel Coffee Farm, GAMABA Weaving Center and Lamitan City Hall.
After the tour, a debriefing was conducted for the participants to contemplate their experience and hear their constructive feedback aimed at enhancing the tourism sites and destinations they visited.
Some of the key recommendations were: Wee Siu Tuy Memorial Hall serves as a venue for an educational tour focused on the history of Lamitan; Bulingan Falls serves as a natural tourist destination and presents an excellent opportunity for camping; Lamitan Eco Park serves as a designated area for family bonding activities; Sitti Auna Riverland Resort and Hotel serves as a premier destination for tourists seeking comfortable accommodations and a tranquil environment for relaxation; Jezreel Coffee Farm can offers educational tours tailored for students enrolled in agriculture courses; GAMABA Weaving Center and carving offer a profound cultural experience; the Lamitan City Hall serves as an excellent location for group photographs, providing a visual record of one's arrival in Lamitan City; the community of Brgy. Cabengbeng has the opportunity to showcase their native chicken variety known as Kaliya; Kasanyangan Peace Monument for historical significance; the ancestral tree, the building, and the church hold considerable historical importance; and Licoan Falls is a beautiful natural spot that makes for a fantastic camping getaway.
Second day was tour in Municipality of Sumisip, a one-hour journey to this southern region of the province and considered a municipality with great potential for its beach resorts and historical tourist destination. Itinerary include visit in the coastal area of Brgy. Cabengbeng Lower, Kasanyangan Peace Monument, Sumisip Municipal Hall, Brgy. Mangal; Mangal Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development Cooperative(MARBEDCO); Nuestra Señora La Virgin Del Pilar and Licoan Waterfalls.
The Familiarization Tour effectively highlighted the province's potential as a tourist destination. The activity resulted in the identification of key areas to concentrate on for enhancing tourism in the province. These initiatives aim to create a more accessible and enjoyable environment for tourists, ultimately benefiting the local economy and community.
